Alice T. Van Meeteren

Alice T. Van Meeteren was called to Heaven by her Lord on the morning of August 31, 2022, at age 98. Alice lived her life in sweet anticipation of this day, and we rejoice in her victorious home going! Alice was a soft-spoken woman of faith who exemplified love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control. She was a life-long helper to her family and friends, as well as to those she encountered along life’s path. She was an encourager. Her quiet grace-filled life in the face of various strong and sometimes overwhelming adversities has been an amazing testimony to so many. Alice (Schaaphok) was born on July 5,1924 in Grand Rapids. She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and was an active long-time member of Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church. She worked for Michigan Bell in downtown Grand Rapids and adored spending time with family and close friends, especially her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed traveling with family and friends in her spare time. Alice met Alvin Van Meeteren in 1964, when she was 40 years old. They were married in 1965 and established their home in Holland, Alvin’s hometown. They welcomed their only child, a daughter, Lynette Alice, into their lives in 1966. Alice spent 57 years as a resident of Holland and was a faithful member of Faith Christian Reformed Church. Her joy was found in her faith, her family, and abiding friendships with neighbors. She was an exceptional caregiver, homemaker, and financial manager. She enjoyed Bible Study, the lakeshore, the sunshine, quiet drives, and annual trips to Florida with family. She was fond of Gaither Homecoming music and also was an avid reader. Alice was blessed with two grandchildren later in life, and she spent a great deal of time in Romeo, Michigan participating in their lives and enjoying their activities. She was a wonderful listener, a great source of unconditional love, and a strong prayer warrior for her family. In 2020, Alice had the joy of becoming a great grandma. In recent years she treasured visits from her grandchildren, loved Facetime calls and receiving pictures of their adventures. Alice lived at The Cottages of Maplewood for the past two years where she was loved by staff and residents alike. She found joy in spending time at her daughter’s cottage, drives to the beach, visits from family, weekly group outings, and playing cards and doing puzzles with friends. Alice is survived by her daughter, Lynette (Gregory) Tarr of Romeo; Grandchildren: Kristina (Marc) Quinones of Stafford, Virginia; Gregory Tarr Jr. of Ann Arbor; and great-granddaughter, Avery Quinones. Alice is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews who were precious to her, as well as her sister-in-law, Hilda (Van Meeteren) Manting. A memorial celebration will be held at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St, Holland on Monday, September 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon and visitation immediately following. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery prior to the service.
