Janet (Bell) Van Dommelen

Janet (Bell) Van Dommelen, 82, of Holland, MI, went peacefully home to her Lord & Savior on July 1, 2025. Janet arrived in this world on February 12, 1943, in Port Huron, Michigan. She was the youngest of four children born to Pearl and Howard E. Bell. She enjoyed a childhood filled with fun, adventure, music, and overseas travel. She graduated with honors from Port Huron High School. On June 16, 1962, Janet married Don Van Dommelen. They established residence in Holland, MI, where they raised their four daughters. Janet was a longtime member of Immanuel Church where she served faithfully teaching Sunday School and working as a Youth Leader. She was trained in the Stephen Ministries and active in BSF where she loved studying the Bible. Janet enjoyed the sweet things in life – time with her family, a good cup of tea, baking and decorating cookies, sewing, calligraphy, reading, and requiring her girls to memorize scripture. Despite her physical limitations, in the later years of her life, she kept her family very busy – loving long phone conversations, texting with many words and emojis, and sending political updates. Just like her Dad, Janet loved politics. She faithfully tuned into the debates and rallies and often sent text messages to her girls encouraging them to “turn on the TV” so they wouldn’t miss the televised political events. Janet was affectionately referred to as Grandma, Grandma Janet, Lil J, Fun-Size, & Nanny by her twelve grandchildren. She emulated pride for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was grateful for each and every moment she could spend with them, individually or together. Janet found it exciting and inspirational to follow the activities of her busy, busy grandchildren and did her best to keep up with and pray for each one. She also found her grandpups Maizey Jane, Riley, and Ellie funny and just so cute. The pups in turn loved their Grandma Janet who offered them treats when she talked with them on the phone. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Sandy Van Dommelen, her husband, Don Van Dommelen, parents Pearl and Howard E. Bell, sister Lois (Jack) Dell, brother Bob Bell, & brother David Bell. She is survived by her daughters who loved her dearly: Debra Barfield, Karen Brown, Sharon Boyce Baczkowski (Dan), Kathy Ridlington (Kevin); grandchildren & great grandchildren: Caleb & Katie Brown, Chelsea & Ryan Dauer, Josiah Brown & Lindsay Hale, Noah Brown, Matthew & Jenna Brown (Clara & Lucy), Natalie Boyce, Timothy Boyce, Sarah Brown, Margaret & Aidan Charron, George Boyce, Hannah Ridlington, & Charlie Ridlington; as well as extended family & dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland MI 49423. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 pm, Friday, July 18, at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
