Lawrence "Larry" Overbeek

Lawrence J. "Larry" Overbeek passed into eternal life on Sunday, June 10, 2018 with family at his side. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Christyne, and five "great kids" (as he often referred to them): Paul (Dorothy) of Houston, TX; Mike (Rashmi) of West Bloomfield, MI; Nancy (Rob) Marshall of Spring Lake; Jon (Cindy) of Grand Rapids; and Karen (Mark) Simmons of Holland. His family includes nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. His father-in-law, Pete Hartsuiker, also survives. He was a lifelong resident of Holland, loved this community and believed it was important to "give back". He served as president of the Holland Jaycees, the Holland Country Club, United Way and the Holland Association of Life Underwriters, which he helped to establish. Tulip Time was in Larry's blood from the first time he participated in a Tulip Time parade at the age of 5. He eventually served on its Board of Directors and was honored to be president of Tulip Time during its 50th anniversary celebration. He was the Wednesday "Street Scrubbing" Parade chairman for seventeen years. Larry enjoyed spending winters in Bonita Springs, Florida where he was also involved in the condominium association and served on its Board of Directors. Larry was proud to be a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual for 53 years, and felt privileged to serve as the local District Agent for 22 of those years. His clients and the other financial representatives in the Holland office were a very important part of his life. He was a sports enthusiast and could be found playing golf, tennis, handball, basketball and any other sport if the opportunity arose. He liked to hunt and spending time with his hunting group at the "Garden of Eden", a piece of land that he and some friends purchased many years ago in Peacock, MI. Larry and Chris loved to travel and spending time at their cottage on Campbell Lake in Hesperia. He cherished his family and friends. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2018 at Beechwood Reformed Church, 895 Ottawa Beach Road, Holland. Interment will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland.
