Rev. Louis Baker

Rev. Louis F. Baker, Holland Michigan, age 93, went home to his Lord and Savior on May 4, 2018. Louis was born on December 21, 1924 in Ionia County MI, to Jacob and Stella (Boeve) Bakker. He graduated from Portland HS, Calvin College, and attended Calvin Theological Seminary and Westminster Seminary where he received his MDIV in 1955. Louis faithfully served the Christian Reformed Church in Minnesota, Michigan, South Dakota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. In 1979, after studying Clinical Pastoral Education, Louis became a hospital chaplain, and developed the Pastoral Care Department at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, IL. Upon retirement in 1990, he and his wife moved to Saugatuck MI, where he served as calling pastor for Central Avenue CRC and Bethany CRC (Holland MI). During his ministry he served on the Calvin College Board of Trustees, Clerk of Classis Wisconsin, and various denominational leadership roles. On December 19, 1952, he married Trudy Maquelin, of Rochester, NY, who survives him. He is preceded in death by 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Louis is survived by his children: Renee (Ron) Kloet of Salem, WI, Dr. Stephanie (Steven) Baker Collins of St. Catharines, ON, The Rev. Karen (Dr. Mark) Stevenson of Washington, PA, and Brian (Fiona) Baker of Dunbar, Scotland; grandchildren: Laura (Bernie), Maggie (Andrae), Beth (Patrick), Jake, Calum, and Cora; and 4 great-grandchildren: Luke, Nora, Ellie, and Miles. Louis served in the US Navy during WWII, as a Sonar Man the USS Perkins Destroyer in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Louis had a great sense of humor and loved fishing, reading, woodworking, and spending time with family. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family. His family wishes to express their deep thanks for the excellent and loving care from the staff at American House-Lakeshore and Holland Hospice. A funeral service honoring the life and faith of Rev. Baker will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland, MI 49423.
