John Breslin 88 set sail on his final cruise early Saturday (July 11, 2015) morning in search of his wife Grace. We pray his voyage meets calm seas and fair winds. John was a member of the greatest generation that won World War 2, and made America the economic engine of the World. John first cruse started in Johnstone Scotland. John immigrated to the US at the age of 2 years, spent his formative years in New York City. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17. Sailed into combat from Greenland to Japan was in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters from 1943 – 1947 on the USS Iowa. After the war he completed High School in New York and sailed to Holland, MI to attended Hope Collage in January 1950, were he met and married Grace (Riemersma) of Zeeland in February 1957. John and Grace settled in Zeeland living for 54 years at 8671 Adams Street. John was with the Army Core of Engineers on the Great Lakes in 1955 -1958 and the Holland Board of Public Works in 1958. John retired from the Holland Board of Public Works in May 1988 after 30 years of service. He remained active in the Holland VFW, and American Legion posts until his death. John was proceeded in death by his wife of 43 years Grace in April 2000, and is survived by his sons Jim and Sheila Breslin of Zeeland, John and Carla Breslin of Holland; grandchildren Ian and Julie Breslin of Glendale Arizona, Leah and Jay Presott of San Francisco, CA, Tasha and Josh Hermes of Barlette, IL, Zane and Melissa Breslin of Newnen, GA, Blair Breslin of Spartensburg, SC; Great Grand Children Carter and Iris Breslin, and Kira Hermes; His Kid sister Doris Cooper of Hasting on Hudson, NY. In-laws Paul and Violet Riemersma of Zeeland, and Nelson and Sherrill Riemersma of Zeeland. Visitation will be Tuesday between 5:00 – 8:00pm @ Yntema Funeral Home 251 South State Street in Zeeland. Funeral services will be held at Yntema Funeral Home @ 11:00 on Wednesday with full military honors. A luncheon will follow the service at the American Legion Post 10820 Paw Paw Dr, Holland, MI. Commitment service will follow at Pilgrim Home Cemetery where his body will be re-united with Grace.
