Kay Van Opynen, 93, of Graafschap, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Tendercare. Kay was born to Herman and Elizabeth (Haan) Van Opynen on August 14, 1920, in Grand Haven, Michigan. Kay was a member of Graafschap Christian Reformed Church where she was a member of the Bible Study and enjoyed knitting mittens, scarfs, and shawls for the knitting ministries. She was a member of Evergreen Commons, a Harmonica Band member, an excellent violinist, and a charter member of the Tulip City Gem and Mineral Society. Kay worked for GE and Robert Shaw before her retirement. Kay loved to travel with her sister Molly and her step-mother Etta Holt in their motor home. They visited all lower 48 states and Mexico. They also enjoyed entertaining family and friends in their home in Graafschap. She was a great fisherman and loved to watch birds and animals in her back yard. Kay truly enjoyed the beauty of nature. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, and her siblings: Sidney, Molly, and Herman. Kay will be sadly missed by many friends that touched her life through her church family, neighbors, co-workers, and her interests in music and geologic study. A funeral service to honor Kay Van Opynen will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland, MI 49423. Her pastors, Rev. Stanley Scripps and Rev. Henry Vanden Heuvel will officiate. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bravo Community CRC. www.langelandsterenberg.com
