Thomas Nelson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Thomas David (Dave) Nelson, age 80, formerly of Westmont, IL passed away Monday, December 6, 2021, in Holland, MI. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Stephanie Hellerman (Alyssa, Mark, and Jack), and Brian and Tami Nelson (Jacob, Ben, and Jocelyn), and his sister Mary and Mike Jawish. Dave was a salesman for Cahners Publishing for 25 years in the Chicago area. Born in Burlington, IA on 8/17/1941 his family moved to Berlin, WI when he was young. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1959. Dave went on to attend University of Wisconsin and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity where he graduated in 1963. Dave enjoyed sailing on weekends for many years and crewed for a couple of Mackinac races. He later owned several sailboats and captained "Ruby Tuesday" in many weekend races, a couple of Tri State races, and lots of Wednesday Night Beer Can races that he enjoyed with his kids and their friends. An avid lifelong golfer he later spent countless hours working on his game in the suburbs of Chicago at numerous municipal courses and enjoyed getting in rounds with his son and grandkids. After retiring David enjoying volunteering with Meals on Wheels, meeting a group of friends for coffee at Brewed Awakenings a couple times a week for word games and hitting local eateries for a grilled cheese and a beer.
